NASC Advisory Council

The NASC Advisory Council:

The NASC National Advisory Council is a standing committee of the NASSP Board of Directors. The membership of the Council includes student council leaders, student council advisers, principals (or assistant principals), a liaison from the National Association of State Student Council Executive Directors (NASSCED), and a liaison from the NASSP Board of Directors.

Goals and Functions:
Council Goals:
The NASC National Advisory Council serves NASSP, NASC and their members by:

  1. Advising the Board and NASSP/NASC staff on issues, topics and concerns related to student council.
  2. Selecting the winners of the middle level and high school Warren E. Shull Advisers of the Year at the regional and national levels.

Council Functions:
The NASC National Advisory Council works to:

  1. Identify and bring forth student council-related issues, topics, and concerns that provide opportunities for NASSP/NASC input or response.
  2. Provide critical review, feedback, and recommendations on issues, topics or concerns as requested by the NASSP Board and staff.
  3. Provide periodic review and recommend revisions or enhancements for NASC Awards programs as requested.
  4. Assist NASSP/NASC staff as called upon during the NASC National Conference.
  5. Represent NASC at occasional special events and meetings as called upon by NASSP staff.

Meet the current members of the NASC Advisory Council

Selection of NASC Advisory Council Members (effective July 1, 2008)

Student and Adviser members will be selected by each Region to serve 2-year terms and will alternate selecting an adviser or student representative. The Middle Level representatives will alternate every two years, being selected from states either from odd or even numbered regions. Applications will be submitted to NASC/NASSP. Student and region adviser selections will be made during meetings of Regional Selection Committees. Selection of the Middle Level Adviser and the Principal At-Large will be made by a special selection committee at NASSP/NASC. The middle level adviser selected will in turn appoint a student council member from his or her school to also serve on the Advisory Council. (All members of the NASC Advisory Council must receive formal appointment by the NASSP Board of Directors)

  1. Council appointments shall be effective July 1 following appointment except those who fill the term of an originally appointed member.
  2. The high school student selections shall be made during the year in which the student is in the ninth or tenth grades of high school.
  3. The president of the National Association of State Student Council Executive Directors will be invited to serve as a non-voting member.

Eligibility to Serve on the NASC Advisory Council

  1. Student, adviser and principal nominees shall be from schools that hold current NASC affiliation. School affiliation with NASC must be maintained throughout his or her term of office.
  2. An Advisory Council member’s school or place of employment and position shall be in the region they represent at the time of selection and be maintained in that region representing an NASC member school, or the Advisory Council member will be subject to replacement on the Advisory Council. However, in the event that an adult (non-student) Advisory Council member during the last year of his/her term, ceases to be a practicing principal, assistant principal, or adviser, such adult (non-student) Advisory Council member may be given the option to remain in his/her position for the remainder of his/her assigned term.

Apply to Serve on the NASC Advisory Council

The next selections for the NASC Advisory Council will take place during the 2011-2012 school year or no later than October 12, 2012. Students, advisers and the principal selected will serve a 2-year term with the first meeting of the group being the January 2013 annual meeting of the Council. Terms will end on June 30, 2014.

High School Students
High school students in grades 9 or 10 during the 2011-2012 school year will be eligible to apply. Students will be selected in Regions 2, 4, 6, and 8. Those with questions about serving on the NASC Advisory Council should contact their state student council directors or the NASC National Office nasc@nasc.us.

Middle Level Advisers
Middle Level advisers (in NASC member schools during the 2011–12 school year) in Regions 1, 3, 5, or 7 or applications will be eligible to apply. The adviser selected will in turn have the opportunity to appoint one of his/her students to serve on the Committee as well. Middle Level Adviser Application

Principals
The Principal position on the NASC Advisory Council is an at-large position. Principals or assistant principals interested in serving on the NASC Advisory Council must be NASSP members (in NASC member schools during the 2011–12 school year). Those with questions about serving on the NASC Advisory Council should contact their state student council directors or the NASC National Office nasc@nasc.us.

Students and advisers interested in applying for the other positions should contact their state student council directors or the NASC National Council members in their regions.

Representation on the NASC Advisory Council

The NASC Advisory Council shall be composed of the following persons:
(4) Advisers (High School) - one from each of the four even or odd numbered NASC Regions
(4) Students (High School) - one from each of the four even or odd numbered NASC Regions
(2) Middle Level Representatives - 1 Adviser/ 1 Student - from one of the four even or four odd NASC Regions
(1) NASSP member Principal/Assistant Principal - at large selection
