National Student Leadership Week - April 17-23
National Student Leadership Week 2011, April 17–23.
This year’s theme is “Student Leaders Saving Lives through Leadership and Service.” There are plenty of ideas for projects being prepared for posting on the NHS, NJHS and NASC Web sites in coming weeks. You can get your student activities group to be creative and think about other ways they can help improve safety for students in your school or community.
Lives are saved every year thanks to a variety of projects undertaken by Honor Society chapters and NASC student councils. Last year, thousands of lives were saved in Haiti thanks to the speedy responses of many chapters and councils that raised donations and provided goods in response to the 2010 earthquake. Other projects educated students and community members on how to live safely and to help others protect their lives.
The theme of saving lives extends to the animal kingdom too! Every year, chapters and councils support numerous animal-focused projects from wildlife rehabilitation centers to local humane societies and rescue shelters.
In addition, in honor of National Youth Traffic Safety Month in May, and in hopes of saving teen lives throughout the summer, the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) and The Allstate Foundation teamed up to develop a contest called Act Out Loud: Raising Voices for Safe Teen Driving (AOL). Now in its fourth year, AOL is a national teen-led and school-based activism competition to help spread the word about safe teen driving. For more information, visit www.ActOutLoud.org.
Look for more resources coming to this site in coming weeks as well as in special insert in the March edition of Leadership for Student Activities magazine.
